Anyone who frequently visits the Mander Mine's Train Weapon Factory is bound to remember the girl with golden hair. Her striking long golden hair—far too vivid for the soot-stained technicians of the rail industry—along with bold streaks of color, flamboyant and avant-garde fashion, and a voice that carries without effort, all make Tennie an unmistakable presence and something of a living signboard for the Train Weapon Factory. And yet, she is also its top engineer. With a single call, she can be found emerging from piles of tools and half-assembled machinery, ready to solve any problem a visiting conductor might bring.

Tennie's stylish appearance is a rare splash of color within the Train Weapon Factory. Ask her why she dresses that way, and her answer will always be the same: "Because I like it!"
Her oversized earrings are welded together from discarded machine parts. Her cape began life as a standard Anita weatherproof coat (lake blue), later cut apart and embellished with her own accessories. Even her personal ride, which also serves as her weapon in battle, is a custom machine rebuilt from salvaged train components. To put an end to the constant complaints that "long hair gets in the way of work," she carefully braids it before every shift, often experimenting with new and surprisingly inventive styles.
Her coworkers at Anita almost invariably describe her as "exceptionally creative." Perhaps it is precisely because of that unconventional creativity that the Train Weapon Factory occasionally receives customer complaints unlike any others, such as:
"Why in the world did you cover the casing of my awesome engine with a bunch of weird little bear stickers?! That's way too childish!"
— Train Weapon Factory Message Board, Anonymous Conductor
"They're just decorative stickers! They peel right off! Besides, teddy bears are the cutest. They're always the cutest!!!!"
— Train Weapon Factory Message Board, Tennie
Rumors surrounding Tennie's background have grown increasingly fantastical over the years. Some claim her parents disappeared into the Turbulent Sea and never returned. Others insist that criminal blood runs through her family.
There are, however, a few accounts that can actually be substantiated. One of them is that Tennie was raised by a Chaos Remains researcher. Those familiar with the story usually add another detail: "A researcher who eats Chaos Remains!"
Anyone who has spent enough time reading research records on Chaos Remains specimens will eventually notice the unmistakable trail left by a certain researcher with an extraordinary appetite. Her tasting notes span an astonishing range of places and years, covering no fewer than two decades and well over a thousand different specimens. The reports themselves also make it abundantly clear that she repeatedly placed herself in mortal danger in pursuit of her work. One cannot help but wonder whether someone like that still qualifies as an ordinary human. And if that was the person who raised Tennie... could the child possibly have turned out completely normal?
Tennie herself, however, has never tried to hide where she came from. Ask about her family, and she will casually refer to that researcher as both "my aunt" and "my guardian," usually slipping in a few half-hearted complaints about her along the way.
"...My aunt? Why are you asking so many questions? What, do you want to try her Chaos Remains soup?"
Then look at Tennie's utterly sincere expression. Look at the "adorable" teddy bear in her arms, whose appearance somehow radiates violence. Then look around at the rows of heavy train-mounted artillery nearby...
Are you really sure you want to keep this conversation going?
The truth behind Tennie's past is nowhere near as fantastical as the rumors suggest. Yet in its own way, it is every bit as complicated... and far more bittersweet.
Before she was adopted, Tennie spent much of her childhood drifting from place to place with her older brother and sister-in-law. The rumble of trains and off-road vehicles became the backdrop of her earliest memories. As she grew older, however, her presence became "less convenient" for the two of them. Their way of raising her changed accordingly, and she was left alone at home for increasingly long stretches of time.
To keep her from getting bored, they would bring back little souvenirs after every "job." A dismantled train engine component from somewhere unknown. Assorted wrenches. Building blocks that never quite made a complete set. Well-thumbed mechanical encyclopedias with worn-out pages...
Even when they were home, the two were usually preoccupied with modifying vehicles or studying increasingly sophisticated machinery, leaving little time to keep Tennie company. It was in this unusually free and solitary environment that she grew up.
On the day her last remaining family members were finally captured by the BCRL, the headline of the "Train Morning Post" read: "Notorious Train Robber Couple Brought to Justice." Tennie herself knew nothing about it. She simply sat at home, quietly assembling her building blocks, waiting for the next "present" her guardians would bring back.
Not long afterward, she was taken in by a child welfare institution and was meant to be sent to an orphanage to await adoption.
Yet the memory that stayed with Tennie was of a certain afternoon, when a young woman with unforgettable crimson hair appeared before her, smiling with unrestrained warmth. Having completed the adoption process ahead of schedule, she officially became Tennie's guardian.
Chen Shuxian, the eccentric Chaos Remains researcher whom nearly everyone at Anita preferred to avoid for one reason or another, found herself feeling a depth of sympathy for the child that she could scarcely explain.
From that day on, under the care of the woman she would come to call her "Aunt," Tennie stepped into an entirely new chapter of her life.
Tennie once found herself hosting a group of children visiting the Train Weapon Factory. Although she had tried her best to avoid such a troublesome assignment, someone from Anita Headquarters eventually persuaded her by pointing out that the visit might inspire the children to discover interests beyond what they already knew. In the end, she gave in.
Her bright, easygoing personality quickly won the children over, and before long she had become the object of their wholehearted admiration. During a break, one little girl suddenly ran up to her, eyes sparkling with excitement.
"You're so cool, miss! Just like those free-spirited outlaw riders from the old movies!"
Tennie understood perfectly why they would think that. Her boldly individual style, together with the enormous custom workshop behind her, did bear a certain resemblance to the glamorous outlaws so often portrayed on the silver screen. Yet she had never imagined herself becoming any sort of criminal. Intrigue and lawlessness had never interested her. She had simply devoted herself to the craft she loved most, refining it day by day until it became the path she walks today.
The child's innocent admiration lingered with her as an unexpected source of unease. From time to time, those words would resurface in her thoughts, prompting her to wonder what kind of person she truly wished to become... and what kind of person she ought to become.
The workshop floor of the Train Weapon Factory is vast and open. It had once been a place that filled her with satisfaction, but whenever uncertainty clouded her mind, the same empty space only seemed to deepen her sense of solitude.
Fortunately, she knows she is no longer someone without a place to belong. She has already found companions she can rely on, people willing to listen patiently to every complaint and frustration she has, never put off by her blunt honesty.
These days, whenever those worries begin to weigh on her, Tennie simply leaves the factory for a while and heads to the Eternal instead. So if you happen to find a mountain of train parts scattered across the freight car, don't worry. It just means Tennie has decided to move her workbench again.
I'm Tennie. I look forward to working with you from now on. ...Can you get a discount for train armament? That's not for me to decide!
Wow, it's my turn! Awesome! I've been so bored. If you're not busy, how about having a chat with me?
Why do I get to see the BCRL people even on your train? Are you friends? Oh, nothing. Don't mind me... I just don't click with those people.
Gosh, BCRL's standard bento really leaves a lot to be desired... Forget it. Better than Chaos Remains soup, at least...
This is Margaret. Come say hello. Hmm? What are you looking at? Over here, that's this bear's name.
A word in advance—I hate it most when people keep telling me what to do while I'm working! I'll finish what I'm supposed to do. Just leave everything to me and... But I screwed up? That was only an accident!
Hey! Wait—hey, you! Stop! No—your clothes are torn! How are you so careless? Come here, I'll stitch it up for you... why are you looking so surprised? What's wrong with me knowing how to sew?
That woman... I mean my guardian—last time she saw me she kept nagging that if I dress like this I'll get arthritis when I'm old... Tch, why does she still treat me like a kid? Hey, do you think there's anything wrong with my clothes? Should I change my style?
Back when I was still in school, I used to fix little things for classmates all the time, even repair the AC in my classrom... Everyone joked that if I couldn't find a job, I could just open a repair shop. I actually believed them at the time!
I've never seen my parents. When I first had memories, all I had left was my older brother and sister-in-law. Where are they now? Mm... don't get scared, okay? They were actually famous train robbers back in the day. Now they're locked up in the BCRL Central Base.
From the BCRL's perspective, I must look pretty dangerous, right? The family of legendary train robbers, and even after being "guarded" by someone from Anita, I still ended up studying weapons... But so what? I am me, you know? I chose this path because I like it, not because of anyone else.
After leaving home, I studied a lot of ways to cook quick, filling meals that don't taste too bad. But sometimes what I make still doesn't taste as good as Chen Shuxian's soup from back then... wait, I actually miss her soup?
I noticed a screw making a weird sound when I passed through the carriage connector earlier. I fixed it for you. Even though this is your train, I'm kind of interested in it... so I'll just help you out with this little thing.
I'm planning to take a vacation and go home soon. Do you want to come with me... and meet... Chen Shuxian...? No, not meeting my parents! She, she's not my parent at all! I just... want to introduce you to her...
You're kicking the wrong can.
Just get this over with.
Hah, you've got a death wish...
Wooooah! Try this!
Waaahhh! This is so satisfying!
I didn't lose... I just... want to rest a bit...
Damn it... how can I go down here...
MVP!? Me!? Seriously!? Ooh... thanks!
